Who read this blog?
I usually have zero visitors, but suddenly the number of visitors has increased.
I wonder what I wrote about that day?
It was the day I wrote, "The charm of a town that you can only understand by not living there," in both Japanese and English.
Maybe they became interested in Suginami Ward?
So today I'll write in a little more detail about Asagaya.
The town of Asagaya is centered around Asagaya Station on the Chuo Line, and spreads out to the main roads of Waseda-dori to the north and Ome-kaido to the south.
To the north of Waseda-dori is Saginomiya in Nakano Ward, and to the south of Ome-kaido is Narita in Suginami Ward (it's so wide that it's split into east and west).
I introduced Koenji to the east and Ogikubo to the west as neighboring towns of Asagaya in a previous article, but I rarely go to Saginomiya to the north (the town name is Saginomiya, but the station name on the Seibu Shinjuku Line is Saginomiya).
In Narita to the south is Zenpukujigawa Park, the largest park in Suginami Ward.
I sometimes go to Narita to enjoy cycling, but that's about it.
Suginami Ward is convenient for east-west transportation because of the train, but it's inconvenient because there is only bus transportation from north to south.
So many people go to Shinjuku first before going to Nerima Ward or Setagaya Ward.
I can't go into much detail about the neighboring towns to the north and south of Asagaya, but Asagaya is large.
The Chuo Line divides it into Asagaya Kita and Asagaya Minami.
I live in Asagaya Kita.
Asagaya Kita is home to Kahoku General Hospital, the largest hospital in Suginami Ward.
However, in the 22 years I've lived there, I've never had a checkup at Kahoku General Hospital.
I've only visited once, for a disaster relief training session with the fire department and fire brigade and Kahoku General Hospital.
Well, if you're in good health, it's a facility you don't need to visit.
Then there's Shinmei-gu, the largest shrine in Asagaya.
It's a very beautiful shrine where many couples hold their weddings.
It's also sometimes used as a filming location for dramas and the like.
Other than that... there's not much else.
On the other hand, Asagaya Minami is home to the Suginami Ward Office and Suginami Fire Station. Suginami Police Station and Suginami Post Office are located in Narita, Suginami Ward, but they are located along Ome-kaido Road and are close to Asagaya Minami.
I don't have much use for public facilities such as the ward office.
But I do use Suginami Post Office a lot.
That's because Suginami Post Office is the main post office.
The counters are open later than smaller post offices, so if you send a letter or package at a larger post office, there's a higher chance that it will arrive a little earlier.
There's a post office and mailbox very close to my house, but I often go all the way to Minami-Asagaya.
And the shopping street.
There's an arcaded shopping street that runs from the east exit of Asagaya Station to the Suginami Ward Office.
While you might think that this shopping street is full of old-fashioned, independent shops, there are also many major drugstores, restaurant chains, mobile phone shops, and more, making it easy for young people from other areas to use.
This shopping street is called Asagaya Pearl Center, and it hosts the Tanabata Festival every year, which attracts many people.
In the fall, a jazz festival is also held, which also attracts many people.
Asagaya Minami is the more lively area overall.
Even though they are both in Asagaya, Asagaya Kita is a residential area and Asagaya Minami is a commercial area, so if you live in Asagaya Kita, Asagaya Minami feels like a neighboring town.
I'm probably not the only one who thinks so.
I sometimes talk to people who have lived in Asagaya for a long time, and some people who live in Asagaya Kita and Asagaya Minami make a clear distinction between the north and the south when talking about Asagaya.
It's not something that bothers you that much, but the value of real estate is higher in Asagaya Minami.
The nearest stations to Asagaya Minami are Asagaya Station on the Chuo Line and Minami-Asagaya Station on the Marunouchi Subway Line, but the nearest stations to Asagaya Kita are Asagaya Station on the Chuo Line and Saginomiya Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line.
There's no doubt that the Chuo Line is convenient, but the Seibu Shinjuku Line is inconvenient.
If you want to hang out in Kabukicho, the Seibu Shinjuku Line may be convenient, but I don't have any interest in hanging out in entertainment districts, so it doesn't matter to me at all.
There are fewer properties for sale in Asagaya Minami, probably because Asagaya Minami is more convenient.
The rent for rental properties is also higher than Asagaya Kita.
If you like inconvenient but slightly cheaper properties, Asagaya Kita may be a good place to look.
Asagaya Kita is at the northernmost point, 6th Street, and it takes about 10 minutes by bicycle to Asagaya Station from there.
It takes about 20 minutes to walk, but there is also a bus.
However, the bus fare is 230 yen, and the arrival time is uncertain depending on the road congestion.
It is often the case that the bus does not arrive until the scheduled arrival time.
It is said that anywhere is a good place to live, but if you are not limited by budget and do not mind the noise of commercial areas, I think it would be more convenient to live in Asagaya Minami.
Well, both Asagaya Kita and Asagaya Minami have in common that they are areas with old wooden houses remaining and are at risk of major damage in a major earthquake.
If you live in Asagaya Kita or Asagaya Minami, you should make sure you know the locations of local elementary and junior high schools that serve as evacuation sites (this is common throughout Japan, as Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries), and you should also find out where the wells are in case the water supply is cut off.
That's all about Asagaya Kita and Asagaya Minami.
